April 27, 2009 It is time to start thinking about camping
season again. We have scheduled the "opening weekend" for May 2-3, and a
weather backup of May 9-10. The opening weekend is a time to get the
water and electricity running, so we are ready for a large group of
volunteers for the main work weekend Memorial weekend.
The weekend of April 18-19 was quite eventful in the foothills of
Colorado. In Evergreen (at 7200 ft) we received over 30 inches of snow -
some homes were without power for 5 days (we were out for about 6
hours).
After a warm week most of our snow was gone (just a couple of inches in
the shade), and the mud is firming up. Sunday afternoon the girls and I
went to camp to take a look around. The power lines are down to both the
RV area, and to the main area.
We had seen where the power company had come around the first bend of
our road
then found a large tree down
across the road, and backed out. We also have at
least 2 areas in the camp where our internal lines are down
- at the and the Boy's cabins
- and by the girl's cabins.
I need to coordinate with several volunteers with chain saws to clear
the one large tree, and the tops of a couple others, so that the power
company can get in and restore the lines to our meters. The camp road is
mostly clear - shaded areas have a couple of inches of snow. At the
bottom split between the up road and the down road - it is probably 6"
deep on the "up" side.
Sunday Night/Monday Morning we also had about 5" of snow in Evergreen -
it is melting off quickly. From news reports - they were predicting 4-8"
in Douglas county - around the camp. The current weather reports are for
warm and sunny for this week - with cloudy and rainy for the weekend.
None of the forecasts extend to next weekend - so we are still debating
about going this weekend (with what we know), or gambling that the next
weekend will be nicer.
